Suddenly Another Post

I tweeted that I'm gonna start my stream playthrough thingie of DT1 tomorrow. (tonight for me and some people at this point) That'll be at 11:30pm (central US time (-6 gmt)) on the 20th. Why so late? It probably won't be a super long start, just gonna get things going, but we'll see. However, on Wednesday, we'll pick up where we left off at 7pm, which was changed so more people have a chance to show up.

Oh right, what is Zephyr's twitch? Oh man, that entire sentence is the link to it!

I'll tweet any time I start streaming.

A friend's comic
A friend of mine, who we will call, Dylan, has been writing a comic book called Old Man Dog. What's it about?
Synopsis is:
"An old man dies. Miles away a dog wakes up in a ditch, but something has changed. The old man and the dog have become one."

For more info on that, go check out the kickstarter page. Why is there a kickstarter though? Dylan has the first issue written and the first few pages inked and colored. However, to continue to finish the rest of issue 1, he's gotta pay those great artists, Fabio GuimarĂ£es and Jessica Jimerson, for their time and work. That's where you guys come in. Go check out his kickstarter page as well as the facebook doobalydo linked above if you'd like and help him out. If not, spread the news to your comic loving friends. Every little bit helps him out. Dylan explains more and certainly much better than I do on his kickstarter.

Here's one page of the comic shown on the kickstarter.

I don't make that sound enticing do I... or maybe I do? This is why I will never go into marketing. Dylan is a writer and filmmaker here in Austin, TX. He's a fun guy who has no idea that a certain ghost in DT3 was named after him... at least until he gets to that part.

You said you were going to be uploading your playthrough to Youtube as well as livestreaming it didn't you? Cause I don't have a remotely reliable enough schedule to watch streams.

Also for the record you really don't have to bother crediting me for hosting the game files. I honestly don't care about recognition for it, just helping out is all.

ZephyrBurst said...

Yes, I use OBS which also records locally while I stream. I'll have the twitch chat on the side like some people do since that might be a thing.

And noted. It's just very helpful to have a reliable place for it that also keeps track of downloads.

I found bugs in the game, how do I report them?(sorry for my bad english :x)

I started Chapter 16 and my first reaction was: "Wait, what?". Really funny mini game, very hard at the end. It took me few hours to complete and I needed to change my strategy few times. Surviving last wave of both 2 last optional stages was a nightmare. But there are issues that I noticed:
1. Steam bomb can sometimes get glitched - my shots going through it, my turrets don't hurt it and it can hurt me and flag.
2. Game can slow down when I'm standing and speed up when I'm moving. It's a little annoying.

Also I have a little request to put time to the next wave in the info on lower right corner of screen. And put it in seconds instead of hundreds of ... something smaller than seconds.

Anonymous, go ahead and report it here.

in water, the dash does not operate normally right but hold forward and make the dash works, was for that to happen?

Warmaster is slowly but surely killing me in real life...but my ego won't let me stop trying! I guess he's the Shroud lord reincarnation!

...i can't help but read DeTemmienation each time i fail!

You might want to post a picture of the comic you're talking about, to give people an idea of the quality being presented. To be completely honest, your description made me think of a low-quality webcomic, not a professional-quality comic that I wouldn't find out of place being sold alongside Marvel/DC comics. Bit of a surprise when I went to the Kickstarter page to see what it was.

There is some way to kill the Sand Crawler definitely? I trying to get to this place http://imgur.com/i8nshmV and... yep. (Sorry for my bad english):P

Gpremier said...

Yes you can kill the Sand Crawler for once and for all. Finish the spider tower for that. You need to have finished gate 6 before if you want to be able to beat spider tower!

Kamil said...

Actually, Spider Tower can be beaten at the beginning of Chapter 14.

Thanks, you guys.

Finally defeated Warmaster and shortly after, finally finished the game! It's been a very long time since since a victory have been this sweet! Kinda wish the final outcome was different thought, with all the effort it takes to get there! Unless there was a way to alter this that i'm ot aware of.

Final count : about 100 hours of gametime(minus 10 hour max for when i left the game open i guess), and over 3000 death. I got to 1001 death with the comment 'i counted and it was funny', i was surprised the comment wasn't something like 'good thing you aren't a prinny'!

Gameplay-wise, that game was pure bliss! All the gates and chapter had different feels and they reproduced their respective game quite right. Even after playing the demo, i was impressed how each gates had enough content to justify, well, a whole normal game in themselves, even when taking in account that it's sprite rip. Speaking of which, the graphic clash much less than DT1(which was already fine compared to other similar project) and it never bothered me(well, except the giant dragon of gate 6, but count taken of the theme, it was probably on purpose). I really like that you reproduced or created many animation trick(multi-sprite bosses, rotating member and the likes), it really makes everything feels much more polished and not like random rips! The soundtrack selection is also really good!

I thought it was just a gimmick at first, but at the end i really liked the scenarios where both player were on screen at the same time, It was especially well thought out in some room of the last chapter and the boss battle before the first powersource.

Having 4 switchable set of ability was also quite cool, at the end it worked much better than expected. There's just some annoying resistance(like chaos soldier immune to melee...in the contra stages, fine as it goes with the theme, but after that it was rather frustrating!)

The dash/double jump mobility also made the game much more dynamic, especially as the dash is different for both character, and allowed for much more dynamic battle and platforming section...althought i'll admit that some of those platforming section were especially frustrating. My hand still hurt thinking of the disco stage that mixed dash, double hump, hit/jump resets, tight barrier AND fast-forwarded speed *shivers...*

Gpremier said...

Most if not all the rooms were well designed, so even with the long stages it didn't felt like i was doing busywork, not to mention that i liked that most of the stage managed to both stay very hard AND have a margin of error instead of instant death unlike lots of games these days that try too hard to be hard without taking the fun factor in account.

But even with great stage design, my favorite part of the DT series are the great boss battles, and here we have them in spades! Alot of these bosses put their original version to shame and are quite originally programmed/conceived, often with lots of phases even for the simplest bosses. Not to mention the endgames bosses that pull all the trick of the book at once In all possible forms!

The assist mode were also a good replacement for the easy/hard mode. by allowing it at the cost of gained XP and powerup collection, it makes you less feel ashamed to rely on it when you're stumped. It took me a long time before i started to use it in certain spot, but like that it feels more like fair game than feeling like a loser, especially as it doesn't garantee victory! And for using it against bosses...well there's the boss museum to regain your honor!

That game really felt like all the game i beat when i was young came back with a vengeance for an ultimate challenge, and on that the game worked perfectly. It will probably be snobbed for the sprite rip, but there's so much content, the returning ennemy often work in a much different way nad and it's so perfectly designed, i was REALLy impressed by the whole experience! The story was entertaining enough without getting in the way of the gameplay, and the scan commentary and room header were also a really cool touch!

So, thanks alot for making this game, i didn't had a blast like this in a long long while! I'm almost never challenged like this by a game that take the gamer seriously without relying on cheap shot. Good luck in your future projects!

P.S. When you mentionned your commentary on gaming in a previous news, i guess you were referring for the last map of the 6th nightmare gate just before the bosses with all the sign? Yeah, it was painful indeed! All that were missing was a paid DLC to triple your health!

i am really not a fan of the minigame in chapter 19..

Nightmare G boss isn't affected by any defence equipment. Is it supposed to be like that?

ZephyrBurst said...

He is, you just have to have the right equipment on. He does normal type from close range and elemental from the projectiles.

Kamil said...

But I was putting normal defence and elemental defence equipments on Claire and still I got 7 damage from him and 8 from meteor. I tried also another 3 defence equipments and nothing work. Maybe I should try on earlier versions.

Kamil said...

Ok, defence equipment works on him but on 1.0.0.1 version of the game.

Kamil said...

Oh, sorry for a prevoius 2 comments. I just got confused. Everything with this fight work fine. I gmade a mistake when testing 1.0.0.1 version cause I put both normal and direct defence equipments and they both lowering his damage. I noticed that just now. Sorry.

Sigh... the 4th nightmare gate is so tediously difficult. It is especially hard to make the requisite frame-perfect maneuvers with this game's eccentric movement system, where the player's horizontal momentum shortly disappears if not holding a movement button while midair, and where tapping the left/right movement buttons while on land does not even move your player. An exercise in masochism.

Kamil said...

You din't saw anything yet. Well, I didn't saw everything as well. For me the hardest room was third from Nightmare Gate G. Over 200 deaths and I almost broke my keyboard. The worst thing is I think I just was super lucky. Still seeing the gimmick from the beginning at the end of room really freaked me out.

Gpremier said...

I remember that room...ut wasn't as freaked out because that fast-forwarded disco-stage manoeuver was far worse!

Anonymous said...

Sounds terrible. I think I will leave this game unfinished before its really annoying parts make me hate it outright.

Unknown said...

Hey Zephyr i found a bug in the 4th nightmare gate at the part with the wonky boxes at the entrance there is a invisible spike that kills u if u jump close to the ceiling with the first 2 spikes

Gpremier said...

Well, that game isn't for the faint of heart after all! Only the best will prevail!

Kamil said...

Well, this game isn't so hard. If you want to play very hard game you should try Hacker9 (sequel of Hack9). This game is only in japanice and looks like Cave Story. We are starting with 4 HP and we can buy 99 HP/MP boosts but this game is very unforgiving. When youre going to die - your equipment is falling on the ground and game is automatically saving. If you die on 1 hit KO spikes then it is a problem but if you fall into bottomless pit you lose your items forever. Also many enemies have 1 hit KO attack and there are many bosses (who looks a lot like Touhou characters - girls from academy with big weapons) also have 1 hit KO attack. There are combination of bosses as well. And sometimes you need items to progress with the game but there are booby traps that can destroy them. Plus there is many trash items on the levels. So good luck in looking for quest item.

ZephyrBurst said...

Ah the phantom spike. I'm tempted to leave it in because it's at the start, but sadly those phantom spikes have been fixed.

Honestly Kamil, that game you're describing doesn't sound very fun. It sounds very tedious as well.

Kamil said...

Yeah, this game can be tedious. Personally, I cheated by creating copy of the game and was watching japanese playthroughs. But music and atmosphere is great. Many boss battles are creative and epic. There are 5 levels of drop from enemies with very unique weapon. There are weapons to destroy trash items, telekinesis, rocketlaunchers lasergun, homing missile, trash launcher and many more used more by enemies but we can find them or do them as well. Also alarm system reminds Metal Gear games (there is third game as well: Hack9 Solid in pseudo 3D with similar name like Metal Gear Solid). If you're interested you can download these games from:http://wahiko94.at-ninja.jp/ or search on: http://www.vector.co.jp/
These are very good games. Especially the first - Hack9 (there is also english playthrough of this game on Youtube.

Yay, I beat Nightmare Gate D! And then I beat E, F, G and H.

Room 3 in Nightmare Gate G was not so bad. The trick is that you have to dash before jumping, not the other way around. I think Nightmare Gate D/E were more difficult.

Despite how much I complain about the game, the game is really quite amazing. It is probably the best and most epic "indie" game I ever played, and also quite high on the list of the best games I ever played. I am 75 hours in and probably have at least 10 more hours of content left to finish, the vast majority of which was highly enjoyable. Awesome job!

Anyway, back to complaining :)

Gpremier said...

Totally agree, it's really epic! And trust me, the last chapter is quite an ultimate ordeal!

Kamil said...

I have a problem. After Discombobulence Area I can't swap weapons, I can't use them (I can't attack). Weapon images aren't displayed in the HUD. I have no idea what to do? there is nothing written about this in the story. Is this supposed to happen?

ZephyrBurst said...

That's a weird one, though I have an idea how that happened. Luckily if you go to any gate entrance, you'll re-enable those.

Kamil said...

Thanks for the reply. It worked. Heh, I thought it's game revenge for saying this game isn't so hard.

Hi Lyra. Cute easter eggs in the secret areas above the starting level.

Kamil said...

Finally beat Nightmare Gate H. I was really surprised. Interesting idea. It reminds me game I never won - 7 Days of Skeptic because it was too scary for me.

Also I found a bug (or I think it is a bug): If I load the game while mommy is trying to catch me then mommy vanish but our items we gathered don't. Example: I died after getting the key to door after save, load, mommy gone, key stayed. What I needed next was to open path to save room without any threat.

I hope somebody will understand what I want to say.

Kooky Kirby said...

I think I've run into a problem. I'm in Chapter 14, and I just got to the dark area in Neo Grime City, and... I don't think the lights are working properly. The spots where the lights actually are, and the spots where the monster things seem to be able to see me don't seem to quite match up perfectly, but more importantly, after a certain point in the room, there aren't any more lights at all. I can wander into the darkness, and from the sound effects the monsters do seem to be able to see me even though I can't see anything. Given other people are commenting about later stuff, I'm assuming it's not a bug that affects everyone, but is it glitching up for me, or am I just missing something?

It's potentially worth noting that I had tried to go through the tower in the desert earlier in chapter 14, and made it up to a dark room in there that didn't seem to be working right either. Chao was able to light things up... but only as long as she was at the entrance to the room. Once I moved her away from the far right side of the screen, or moved far enough left for the entrance to scroll off screen, she stopped giving off light. I didn't have any issues like this with earlier dark areas, though, so I have no idea why these ones are suddenly messing up like this. Any help with this would be appreciated.

Kamil said...

One more thing about load game bug in Nightmare Gate H. Now that I think about it before loading I didn't got the key to door after save. Now I'm thinking (but I didn't test that) that if I would load game while black barrier active I would be stuck in the save room forever.

ZephyrBurst said...

@Kooky Kirby
That's probably a graphics card issue. I have to use post rendering effects to get those lights to work the way they do, so maybe the graphics card isn't handling it well. For some, they crash the game for people. For science, what graphics card do you have?

@Kamil
You can't get stuck in that room, the lights always reset when you go in.

Kooky Kirby said...

Well, apparently I have an ATI Radeon X1200. I'm not sure how good/bad that is, but considering the computer itself is fairly old, I wouldn't be surprised if the graphics card is the problem. Is there any good solution though besides just getting a new graphics card?
